AppWellness

The Calm system

A wellness app that builds five daily return reasons from a single free check-in suite.

Overview

The design logic

Calm's retention layer is built around five separate check-in types, mood, sleep, gratitude, Daily Calm reflection, quick journal, each of which triggers its own reminder channel on first completion. Five independent daily return touchpoints, all free, all anchored to different times of day. The daily content layer (Today's Dailies) is partially paywalled, but the check-in suite that drives daily returns requires no subscription.

Core loop

The mechanic sequence

The core loop is: open app → complete Daily Calm → complete mood check-in → complete sleep check-in → set daily reminder for each → accumulate streak → reach milestone → share streak card to social. The check-in suite's five reminder channels create five separate daily entry moments, each anchored to a different context.

RetentionStreak / Streak Bonus

Located on the profile tab rather than the home screen, the lowest-prominence streak placement in the library, but shareable as a pre-formatted Instagram Stories card at each milestone.

RetentionDaily Login Reward

Today's Dailies refreshes daily with five distinct content types, each with its own first-completion reminder channel, mood, sleep, gratitude, reflection, quick journal.

Gifting

The 30-day guest pass gift is more generous than the standard 7-day new-user trial, making referral the highest-value acquisition path for recipients.

Key insight

The check-in suite creates five reminder channels from one feature set. A user who completes all five check-ins has installed five separate daily return triggers at different times of day. The free tier's retention infrastructure is more sophisticated than its content access.

What makes it work

The system works because the check-ins are genuinely useful without the content library

The system works because the check-ins are genuinely useful without the content library. A user who cannot afford the subscription can still maintain a mood log, sleep log, gratitude journal, and daily reflection, all free, all with reminder support. The free tier is a complete daily wellness practice, not a teaser.
